Why did you decide to participate in this project?
I wanted to document my high school years. I love being able to look back at old photos and videos and reminisce about the past.
How do you think your participation changed the course of your high school years?
I participated more towards the end of high school seeing as I had more going on in my life in the last couple years.
If you could go back and do it again, would you? Or would you choose not to? Why?
I would still do it without a doubt. It has been great being able to share my stories on camera. Not only do I now have recorded memories of the past several years, but I was able to be a part of a unique experience.
What are some of your thoughts about the things that happened during the four years of high school? What was your best moment? Your worst?
When I look back at the past years, these three things stand out the most: danceteam, Josh, and surgery. Each has brought so much to my life. Being a part of the Dazzler danceteam was a rewarding experience. Though there was plenty of drama, being on this team made me more confident, more proud, more disciplined, and more dedicated than I had ever been before.
As my first boyfriend, Josh has taught me how to love and be loved. He has shown me a different happiness and strength than I had previously felt.
Lastly, my surgery has given me new light; it has been a blessing. Without having been through this medical obstacle I would not have the same compassion and desire to help people. I am a stronger person because of it.
I cannot say I have had a single best moment. Making the danceteam was an unforgettable moment, starting to date Josh was a fairytale moment and waking up from my surgery was an indescribable moment of happiness. Being named homecoming princess was also a moment I cherish. I do not feel like I had a worst moment; of course I am not proud of everything that I did and I shed many tears over the years, but you can learn from every bad moment, which, to me, makes it not so bad.
What do you hope high school girls can learn from your story?
I do not think there is anything specific I want girls to learn. I hope that they can relate to parts of my story and through that feel a little less alone in their own experiences.
Now that you have some distance, how do you remember your high school experience, was it a good one or was it a struggle?
I had a great high school experience filled with great teachers, great friends, and a great deal of support and encouragement from family.
Anything else that you'd like people to know about your experience, who you've become, and what you hope to do in the future?
The experience of being in the documentary has been a rewarding one. It has helped me to get to know myself, the people in my life, and the things I do, much better. Though I would not say I have changed a lot over the years, I have grown quite a bit. I appreciate life, all the people in my life, and all the opportunities I have, much more. I do not know exactly where I would like to be in the future, but I know I want to help people, specifically children and teens, to have better lives. I want to help them to see the good in life and the good in people. I want to help them believe in themselves and the things they are capable of, no matter what life has handed them. Every person deserves a life filled with happiness; I want to be a part, even if just a small part, of showing someone how they can achieve that happiness.

Why did you decide to participate in this project?
It was a really spontaneous decision and I just decided to stick with it.
How do you think your participation changed during the course of your high school years?
I think my participation stayed the same throughout filming.
How do you feel about being on national television?
I am excited but I am also very nervous.
If you could go back and do it again, would you? If not, why?
If I could go back the only thing I would change would be how I dressed, I looked so goofy.
What are some of your thoughts about the things that happened during the four years of high school? What was your best moment? Your worst?
There were so many great moments in high school that its hard to name just one, but I would have to say the one of the best was graduation. The worst moment was when my best friend Cara moved away during Junior year.
What do you hope high school girls can learn from your story?
I hope they learn that it doesn't matter what other people think of you, just be yourself and have fun.
Now that you have some distance, how do you remember your high school experience, was it a good one or was it a struggle?
My high school experience was a mixture of both. There were a lot of things that I struggled with but overall my high school experience was a good one.
Anything else that you'd like people to know about your experience, who you've become, and what you hope to do in the future
For the future, I plan on becoming a high school math teacher and just enjoying life as it comes.

Being a teenager is risky business. This premiere episode is rich with contrasts as both Lauren and Cappie appear to be living on the edge. Through these two compelling stories we see how some teenagers find themselves at risk while other teenagers put themselves at risk. Both Lauren and Cappie journeyed into places that would terrify any mother.
LAUREN G.
Lauren is the ultimate optimist. She may be the only person to go through high school without making one enemy. Her drill team accomplishments and crowning moments remind us of high school fun. Her story also reminds us how fragile life can be. It was difficult, yet inspiring to witness Lauren and her family live (for two years) with the uncertainty of Lauren's diagnosis. When her tumor grew and Lauren required brain surgery, the family's anxiety was palpable. Yet, so was their courage. I was honored that Lauren and her parents trusted me and my crew to shoot the day of surgery. It was hard to be there, but it was the only place I wanted to be that day. Lauren shared my commitment to telling her story - no matter what the outcome. People ask me if the family members were really as strong as they appear. My answer is a resounding "yes." However, the strength seemed to be less individually-generated and more family unit-ignited. They drew strength from a shared core. They held each other up. The whole was definitely greater than the sum of its parts.
CAPPIE
Cappie's physical metamorphosis is emblematic of the remarkable transformation that takes place over four high school years. From acne and braces to several hair color changes, we see Cappie change before our eyes. And, all that change on the outside is only a small reflection of the changes stirring on the inside. As a freshman, young Cappie captured my heart with her innocence and her honesty about the disappointments regarding her father. Cappie and her mom reminded me a lot of the relationship between my daughter and me. I completely identified with her mom's concern for the absence of a meaningful male figure in her daughter's world. I saw a deep mother-daughter connection enhanced by a shared affinity for laughter and pure fun. Cappie's story represents hope for high school girls who feel isolated and different - young girls who experience more than the average amount of financial or family pressures. It's so refreshing for me how Cappie transcended the challenges in her high school years. While she was vulnerable to experimentation, she ultimately did not fall victim to her circumstances. She learns, grows and takes responsibility. Cappie evolves into a beauty inside and out!
By the end of the episode we observe each girl with a firmer grip on their lives - empowered to steer their lives in the direction they choose.
