Cate, a competitive athlete, tries to adjust to her father's remarriage. Beth is her stepsister and the girls go off to high school more as friends. But family drama breaks out in the girls' household and before they know it, their parents are headed for an ugly divorce. The aftermath threatens to tear apart their friendship. Beth is pretty sure she won't see Cate again.

In contrast to Cate and Beth, Lauren has a very stable family and focuses on academics and going to an out-of-state college. Politics becomes her passion in high school. Will she get accepted out-of-state or will she be stuck in Kansas?
